[Video] Perth: Aboriginal protesters rally against community closuresNews Perth, Australia - 23 April 2015
Aboriginal protesters and their supporters criticised the state government's planned closure of more than 100 remote communities at a protest in Perth's Forrest Place and march to parliament on April 23, 2015.
Organised by the Nyoongar Tent Embassy, the protest included the performance of a traditional Indigenous dance as well as speeches from local elders and Sydney-based Grandmothers Against Removals spokesperson Uncle Albert.
The planned closure of remote communities was announced by Premier Colin Barnett's government last year, after financial responsibility for servicing these areas shifted from the federal government to the state.
Despite ongoing opposition from protesters in Australia and overseas, the state government maintains the closures will result in better health, housing and education outcomes for Aboriginal people.
