Statues in Bogotà
Statues tell stories in Bogotà-Colombia. From the Candelaria, an historic neighborood in the heart of the capital city, to the central cemetery up to the airport, some statues which represent the
Bogotá
story of the city.
In the candelaria neighborood this special figures are put there in order to scare spirits. They are all over the roofs and they protect the streets, the buildings and the inhabitants.
In the monumental cementery there is another very strange statue. It represents Leo Kopp, a german immigrants, who created one of the biggest brewery in latinamerica: Bavaria. For a strange reason he has become an holy figure and many peopl go to his tomb and they whisper at his ear their wishes as if he could realize them. A strange example of syncretism.
The third statue is the one built after comedian Jaime Garzon. He was a Colombian journalist, a comedian and political satirist. In addition to his work on TV, he also had roles as peace negotiator. He was murdered arguably by paralimitary forces in 1999, although the circumstances have not been cleared. Garzón created many different and instantly recognizable fictional characters, the last of which was his debut as "Heriberto de la Calle", a shoe polisher who interviewed different personalities, including politicians. The marble statue represents this character altough the city hall decided to put it not in a central place but on the street which go to the airport
