Women protest Rio +20 objectives

Weather Rio de Janeiro, Brazil - 18 June 2012

Thousands of women gathered in downtown Rio de Janeiro on June 18, 2012, to protest the upcoming Rio +20 Conference.

According to an article in Agence France Presse, the women believe world leaders are using the development of a green economy as a guise for capitalistic objectives.

Leaders from the around the world plan to attend the Rio +20 Conference, which will last from June 20 to June 22. The Conference will primarily discuss strategies for sustainable development, that promote green poverty-reduction strategies.

Our contributor writes :

"The march of women, as the movement was called, had the participation of about 5000 women in downtown Rio de Janeiro. They gathered at the Museum of Modern Art, and then walked by President Antonio Carlos Avenue and Assembleia Street until Largo da Carioca, where they stopped. The claims are the equality of salaries between women and men in equal positions, the legalization of abortion and that women cannot be treated as commodities."
