Much anticipated Supermoon rises in India

Weather Kolkata, India - 06 May 2012

The much-anticipated "supermoon" appeared in the sky on May 6, 2012,  when the natural satellite of Earth was at its largest and brightest in Kolkata, India and throughout the rest of the world.

The supermoon was actually a perigee full moon, meaning the Moon appeared up to 14% larger and 30% brighter in the night sky.

According to global reports, at 9.05 pm IST, the distance between the earth and the moon was 3,56,955 km — the closest in 2012. The angular size of the moon will be 0.5515 degrees. This phenomenon occurs because the orbit of the moon is not completely, perfectly circular. So, once a year (the last one being in March 2011), the world receives a supermoon — but this year it was more obvious than ever, because of its coinciding with the full moon.
