Protesting municipal workers clash with Thessaloniki police

Politics Θεσσαλονίκη, Greece - 30 May 2012

Clashes between police and municipality workers who were protesting occurred outside the city hall of Thessaloniki on May 30, 2012.

The municipality workers were protesting about the privatization of water disposal. Some of the protesters ended up fainting or needing medical attention due to the tear gas that was used on them. The workers do not like the idea of the privatization of the main municipality's cleaning service. So, they striked and protested against the international open competition that gives the assignment of garbage vehicle repair to private companies.

The protesters attempted to enter the amphitheater where the counsel was meeting, but they were forced to leave by the police.

Deputy Mayor of Cleansing Hasdai Kapon claimed the whole service is not being privatized, just the opportunity for garbage vehicles to be repaired more efficiently and quickly by private companies.

But the Greek Communist Party, KKE, accused the mayor of Thessaloniki of ”hostility towards the people and the employees.”
