Journalists protest violence in Dhaka, Bangladesh

Journalists protested in front of the National Press Club in Dhaka on May 29, 2012, protesting the recent violence against bdnews24.com journalists and Prothom Alo journalists.

They demanded justice in the form of immediate arrests of the criminals responsible.


Three photojournalists of the Bengali-language daily, Prothom Alo were attacked recently, and journalists from bdnews24.com were stabbed on Monday night. Those attacked from bdnews24.com were Newaz Mohammad Rifaat, the sub-editor, and correspondent Salahuddin Wahed Pritom.  Several other journos including office staff Ruhul Amin were attacked. They are being treated at the United Hospital in Dhaka.

Making a human chain, the protesting journalists demanded attention and the arrests of those responsible. They began their demonstrations around noon.

Journalists have been subject to killings and torture over the past three months.
