Protesters gather in Cairo for Palestinian Nakba Commemoration

Politics Not vetted story Vetted story Cairo, Egypt - 15 May 2012

Egyptian and Palestinian protesters gathered in front of the Arab League headquarters for the 64th anniversary of the Palestinian Nakba or "catastrophe" on May 15, 2012 in Cairo. The Nakba is often the name used to describe the 1948 exodus of over 700 000 Palestinian people, who were forced by the Israeli army to leave their land during the Arab-Israeli War.

According to bikyamasr.com, Egyptian and Palestinian protesters chanted together, expressing the importance of Arab unity and asking that the land lost during the Nakba be returned. Although dozens of activists assembled to commemorate the event, the turnout paled in comparison to  last year's, which attracted thousands of protesters.

This year's commemoration took place in light of recent negotiations between the Israeli government and Palestinian prisoners the previous day, in which the Israeli government agreed to improve prison conditions, after over 2000 Palestinian prisoners went on a 77-day hunger strike. Egypt played a mediating role in the discussion.
