Members of the Occupy London movement gather at St. Paul's Cathedral before moving into the city on May 12, 2012.
Occupiers moved into the city to target what they deemed "1 % institutions." Around 300 demonstrators protested outside London's largest banking institutions, including its central bank, Bank of England, Goldman Sachs, RBS, Merrill Lynch and Santander.
Demonstrators set up 10 tents outside the Bank of England, in spite of police requests to clear the site. Protesters' refusal to leave the site resulted in 11 arrests. Conflicting reports remain, however, between Occupy demonstrators and the City police regarding the number of arrests that took place.
The protests were part of the Occupy movement's global day of action against capitalism. Demonstrations also took place in Madrid, Barcelona, Moscow, New York and Athens. Occupy London recently stated that the next protest would take place on May 15, 2012, at the British Bankers' Association.
