The people of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) protested at Nayapaltan in Bangladesh's capital, Dhaka, on May 2, 2012. The BNP is calling for the truth to be let out and is demanding the return of party leader/organizing secretary Elias Ali.
Ali and his driver went missing on April 17, 2012. His car was found by police, abandoned near his Banani residence in Dhaka, on April 18. Since then the BNP has demanded the return of their party leader. The chairperson of the BNP, Khaleda Zia, alleged that the government agency and RAB had taken Elias Ali, but Sheikh Hasina, the prime minister, dismissed this and said the BNP was causing "drama" because of the Elias Ali issue.
On April 18, police found Elias’s car abandoned near his Banani residence in the capital and the BNP enforced dawn-to-dusk hartals for three consecutive days on April 22, 23 and 24 demanding that the party leader be returned immediately.
