On October 15, 2011, hundreds of demonstrators gathered in the heart of Hong Kong's financial district, the Exchange Square podium in Central, to speak out against corporate greed, the excesses of capitalism and social inequality.
While the protesters stand in solidarity with their counterparts on Wall Street and across the US, they also take aim at the upper class in Hong Kong, a city of 7 million known for its lightly-regulated financial markets and super-rich property magnates. Participants discussed how Hong Kong people are affected by the skyrocketing property prices fueled by wealthy speculators and the highly unequal distribution of wealth.
A number of political groups have joined the rally, including Left 21, People's Power, the League of Social Democrats, a student group protesting against the exploitation of workers in third-world countries by Apple Inc., and protesters dressed in Guy Fawkes masks from the movie V for Vendetta.
