Chile: Police clash with demonstrators during a memory march

News Santiago, Chile - 05 January 2016

Hundreds of people took part in a march through Ahumada street, in Santiago, Chile, to commemorate the 8th anniversary of Mapuche indigenous activist Matias Catrileo's death, on January 5, 2016.

Catrileo was shot to death by a police officer on January 3, 2008, during a land dispute in southern Chile. The officer was sentenced to three years in jail, but served his time on probation, and was eventually removed from the police force. The march ended with clashes between demonstrators and Chilean riot police.
