Armenia: Yerevan hosts memorial service for victims of genocide

News Yerevan, Armenia - 24 April 2015

Several hundred people gathered at the Armenian Genocide Memorial in the capital of Yerevan, Armenia on April 24, 2015 to honour the victims of the 1915 massacres.

The ceremony was one of several held across Armenia to mark the centenary of the death of nearly 1.5 million people in eastern Anatolia on the eve of World War One.

The forget-me-not was chosen as the symbol of the event, attended by Francois Hollande and Vladimir Putin. Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan reiterated his desire to see more countries recognise the genocidal nature of the massacre.

The role of Turkey - historical successor of the Ottoman Empire - is at the heart of the debate. President Tayyip Erdoğan still refuses to use the word genocide, and preferred to pay tribute to victims of the 1915-16 battle of Gallipoli on this day of mourning for the Armenian people.
