India: Flash Mob to end Hunger in New Delhi

News New Delhi, India - 07 June 2013
A group of children’s organizations including Save the Children, World Vision and Children’s Campaign - NINE IS MINE raised a call against malnutrition, at Central Park in New Delhi. A musical band Parikrama performed during the event.

India loses 16.5 lakh children every year even before they reach their fifth birthday. With nearly half of India’s children malnourished, malnutrition is one of the single largest killers of children under the age of five.
The Global Day of Action on hunger comes a day before a crucial 'Nutrition for Growth' summit hosted by the UK and Brazilian governments and the Children’s Investment Fund Foundation in London. This will be attended by Heads of State and ministers from the G8 and the developing world, and takes place ahead of the G8 summit a week later in Northern Ireland.

This summit represents a historic chance to tackle the scourge of malnutrition, ensuring that every child has the opportunity to fulfill their potential by increasing investment in life-saving nutrition interventions. At present only 0.37% of total global aid is spent on basic nutrition interventions, despite malnutrition being the underlying cause of at least a third of all child deaths worldwide, while the global economic impact of malnutrition could cost up to $125 billion.

The Global Day of Action on hunger comes a day before tens of thousands of people in the UK will gather in Hyde Park, central London, during the day of the Nutrition for Growth Summit, with speakers and artists from around the world. A massive iconic image will be created made up of 250,000 spinning flowers with 2 million petals representing the two million children’s lives lost to hunger every year.
