Youth Fight for Jobs protests high costs of Olympic games

News London, United Kingdom - 23 July 2012

The Youth Fight for Jobs organization held the "Austerity Games" on July 23, 2012 in Hackney Marshes, in London, United Kingdom.

According to the Youth Fight for Jobs official website, the organization used the Austerity Games as an opportunity to launch its manifesto, and described the Games as representing "a future for the 99% with ten athletics events aimed at highlighting the plight of young people in the shadow of the expensive and corporate Olympic Games."

Young people and trade unionists sent teams to the Austerity Games, which featured numerous activities with austerity-related names including "Race to the Bottom," "Property High Jump," "Deficit Discus," and "Hardship Hurdles."

Youth Fight for Jobs hopes that Olympic facilities will be used as affordable housing options, benefiting local communities, instead of being sold back into the private sector. The organization criticizes the £24 billion that was spent on the Olympics, while unemployment remains and inequality within the City of London continues to rise.
