PC Alex MacFarlane leaves Southwark Crown Court after denying charges of racial abuse

News , United Kingdom - 29 June 2012

Metropolitan police officer Alex MacFarlane left Southwark Crown Court in London, on June 29, 2012, after denying charges of racial abuse.

MacFarlane is accused of uttering racial slurs to Mauro Demetrio on August 11 of last year, after Demetrio was arrested, under the suspicion that he was driving under the influence. No charges were brought against Demetrio.

The incident occurred in the midst of the London riots, which took place from August 6 to August 10 of last year, and were triggered by police response to a peaceful protest in Tottenham Hale.

MacFarlane will be tried on October 15, 2012.

Our contributor writes:

"PC Alex MacFarlane was charged with causing racially aggravated intentional harassment, alarm or distress to Mauro Demetrio. The abuse was alleged to have taken place during last year’s riots.

The Crown Prosecution service decided to press the charge because Mauro Demetrio secretly recorded the alleged abuse on his mobile phone."
