Julian Assange supporters gather outside Ecuador Embassy in London

News London, United Kingdom - 20 June 2012

Supporters of Wikileaks founder Julian Assange rally with placards outside the Ecuadorian Embassy in central London on June 20, 2012.

According to an article in the Houston Chronicle, Assange is currently using the Ecuadorean embassy as a place of refuge, after the Swedish government asked to extradite him.

In December 2010, Assange was arrested in London, following a request from Swedish authorities. The Wikileaks founder is accused of sexually assaulting two women in 2010.

Assange recently requested political asylum from the Ecuadorian government. His request is currently under review.

Police officials recently stated that Assange violated the conditions of his bail by spending the night in the Ecuadorean Embassy, and will be arrested, should he decide to leave. The police are not allowed to enter the embassy without permission from the Ecuadorean ambassador.

Assange's supporters fear that if the Wikileaks founder is extradited to Sweden, he may then be extradited to the United States, where he could face charges of espionage. An espionage conviction may result in the death penalty.
