Greek population awaits coalition announcement

News Θεσσαλονίκη, Greece - 19 June 2012

Greek citizens wait in anticipation of further news regarding the coalition government in Thessaloniki, Greece on June 19, 2012.

The recent June 17 elections were Greece's second attempt to form a new government, after the May 6 elections, which resulted in no party receiving enough of a majority to form a coalition government. While New Democracy received the highest number of votes in the most recent elections, the party did not receive sufficient votes to form a parliamentary majority and must thus form a coalition government.

Our contributor writes:

"Conservative chief Antonis Samaras met with the leaders of all the potential coalition partners after receiving the mandate to form a government from President Karolos Papoulias.

New Democracy, PASOK and Democratic Left are poised to agree on the formation of  coalition government Tuesday [June 19] after holding “constructive” talks yesterday.

Samaras’s overtures were turned down by SYRIZA’s Alexis Tsipras and Panos Kammenos of Independent Greeks but PASOK’s Evangelos Venizelos and Fotis Kouvelis of Democratic Left suggested that there was enough common ground to form an alliance."
