Pro-austerity party wins Greek election

Leader of the New Democracy conservative party Antonis Samaras celebrates his victory on June 17, 2012.

The pro-austerity New Democracy party has emerged victorious in the elections in Greece, sealing the fate of Greece and the euro.

According to Interior Ministry figures, the conservative New Democracy party claimed nearly 30 percent of the votes, winning 128 of the 300 seats in Parliament. Its main rival, the Syriza party, won 72 seats, while the pro-bailout Socialist PASOK party came in third with 33 seats.

The pro-bailout New Democracy party has come out on top in Greece’s parliamentary elections, having gained 30 per cent of the votes. With more than 80 per cent of votes counted, the anti-austerity leftist Syriza party is trailing on 26,6 per cent.
