Greece: Pre-election rally for far-right party Golden Dawn's Nikolaos Michaloliakos in ThessalonikiNews Θεσσαλονίκη, Greece - 10 June 2012
Nikolaos Michaloliakos, leader of the extreme right-wing Golden Dawn party, speaks to supporters during a pre-election rally at Thessaloniki Greece, on Sunday, June 10, 2012.
Reeling from a vicious financial crisis that has cost them pensions and jobs, Greeks have been turning away in droves from the mainstream politicians they feel have let them down. Golden Dawn, whose prominent members have expressed admiration for Nazi leader Adolf Hitler, won nearly 7 percent of the vote in May 6 elections and 21 seats in the 300-member parliament.
Greek citizens will have to vote again on June 17 as no political party was able to form a government after the first election last month. The Associated Press has a story about the possible consequences of this election.
Golden Dawn is also at the center of a scandal: his official spokesman Ilias Kasidiaris is still at large after assaulting two female left-wing rivals on a live TV talkshow last week.
