Egyptians demonstrate on Tahrir Square after the ruling in Mubarak's trial

News , Egypt - 02 June 2012

Mubarak's verdict is seen by many as a step on the way to his future acquittal

Tens of thousands headed to Tahrir Square on 2 June 2012, after Judge Ahmed Rifaat sentenced former dictator Hosny Mubarak to 25 years in prison for not preventing the murder of numerous protesters during the 25 January Revolution. According to many, Judge Refaat's outrageous verdict is nothing but a political ruling, which not only purges Mubarak and his sons from all corruption charges, but also presents Mubarak and former Prime minister El-Adly with the opportunity to appeal to the Court of Cassation, and likely be acquitted of all charges.

In his verdict, judge Ahmed Rifaat also acquitted other senior police commanders from the accusation of ordering the killing of protesters.

Former presidential hopeful Hamdeen Sabahy and prominent Egyptian film director Khaled Youssef were seen together at the protest on Tahrir Square.
