Qatar: 19 people killed in mall fire

News Doha, Qatar - 29 May 2012

After a blaze that killed 19 people — 13 of them children and two firefighters — in Doha, Qatar on May 29, 2012. Authorities issued arrest orders for the owner of the mall and four others as investigations looked into possible safety lapses during the fire at a daycare center taking care of the Gulf nation's large expatriate community.

Supposedly, the sprinkler system at the Villaggio complex malfunctioned.

Sprinkler systems malfunctioned at the Villaggio complex and rescue crews struggled without blueprints of the vast complex, bringing calls for sweeping safety and licensing reviews in one of the world's fastest-growing countries. Two firefighters also were killed.

The cause of the fire has not yet been announced.

The tragedy is expected to cause those in the gulf regions to re-examine their safety measures.

Rescue crews in Qatar's capital Doha had to punch through the roof of the mammoth Villaggio mall to get to the day care, where they found 2-year-old New Zealand triplets and three Spanish siblings.
