Egyptians vote for a new President

News Cairo, Egypt - 24 May 2012

Egyptians went to the polls on May 23 and 24, 2012, voting in their first presidential election since the removal of longtime President Hosni Mubarak. These photos are from May 24.

Election officials will announce the results on May 29, 2012. However, Egypt's newspapers say some preliminary results are showing Mohamed Morsi of the Muslim Brotherhood emerging as a top candidate.

Some results in the news indicate strong showings by moderate Islamist Abdel Fotouh (supported by liberals, leftists, and Christians) and former prime minister Ahmed Shafiq and former foreign minister Amr Moussa, the latter of which are secularists who served under Mubarak. Hamdeen Sabahi also seems to have fared well, gaining in the opinion polls especially attracting those voters who do not want an Islamist or a former Mubarak regime leader in the office.
