Pharmacists on 24-hour strike in Greece

News Θεσσαλονίκη, Greece - 23 May 2012

Pharmacies throughout Greece were closed all day Wednesday, May 23, 2012, so that owners could protest social security funds that have yet to be settled. Pharmacists are also warning that some medications are already in short supply — and social security still hasn't paid its drug bill.

The Greek pharmacists have also decided to no longer allow customers to buy medication on credit until the National Organization for Healthcare Provision (EOPYY), Greece's number one health care provider, settles its prescription debt of €250 million issued in March 2012.

Our contributor wrote: Pharmacies in Greece close on Wednesday, May 23/2012, as owners launch a 24-strike to protest debts by the new health insurance umbrella EOPYY. Pharmacists say that EOPPY owes them 270 million euro, while insurance funds have outstanding debts 250 million euro from 2011.

Furthermore, pharmacists will not give prescription medication on credit as of May 23/2012. Insurers will have to pay by their own pockets and then request refund by EOPYY.
