Thousands turn out for Chicago NATO protest

News Chicago, United States - 20 May 2012

Many different demonstrations and protests took place in Chicago during NATO's G8 Summit on May 20, 2012.

Veterans of the Iraq and Afghan wars tossed war medals away. The Rev. Jesse Jackson was also present at protests to show solidarity with different movements. Self-proclaimed anarchists abounded, and Occupy Chicago had a huge showing. Thousands of people protested against wars, capitalism, NATO, and many other things. Some argued with police and eventually violence broke out. The Chicago police department arrested at least 50 people. However, protestors continued to sit-in, lie-in, chant, and refuse to disperse the area. They could not get very close to where the world leaders were meeting, as the area is blocked off by several blocks. Still, the protestors' presence is making an impression worldwide, and the alleged brutality of the Chicago police is being questioned by journalists and citizens alike, worldwide.
