Protesters in Bulgaria demand the release of Palestinian prisoners

News Sofia, Bulgaria - 10 May 2012

Protesters in Sofia, Bulgaria stand in solidarity for Palestinian prisoners currently on hunger strike, on May 10, 2012.

Rallies and protests are taking place around the world, demanding the release of around 1,500 Palestinian prisoners, who have been on strike since April 17. Prisoners are demanding that living conditions be improved, as well as permission to see family members and speak with lawyers. They are asking that the Israeli government's policy to detain prisoners indefinitely be revoked.

The recent hunger strikes have attracted attention from international organizations. The Red Cross recently asked that the Israeli government transfer six of the detainees to local hospitals, and permit visits from family members. In addition, Israel's high court recently denied a request for the release of two prisoners, who have been on hunger strike for 70 days. The Court justified its decision by stating that the men remained security threats.
