Nepal’s Army takes control of former Maoist fighters

News , Nepal - 11 April 2012

Nepal’s former Maoist rebels on Tuesday handed over control of their fighters and weapons to the national army, in a move likely to bolster a faltering peace process nearly six years after the civil war ended, as Reuters reports.

Our Citizenside Reporter took these pictures of Maoist fighters taking part in a training in a remote village of Western Nepal in 2007.

Thousands of Maoist fighters, who battled the Nepal Army during the decade-long civil war, have been housed in camps across the volatile Himalayan republic waiting to join the national army.

Pictures 10 & 11: Chairman and supreme commander of the Unified Communist Party of Nepal (Maoists) Chhabilal Dahal, better known as Pushpa Kamal Dahal or Prachanda, addresses his supporters in Kathmandu, capital of Nepal on May 9, 2010.
