Civil defence authorities were on alert, and problems with power were reported across the country on a day of heavy snowing across the northern parts of Greece, including Thessaloniki, on December 22, 2011.

Most of the schools in the northern parts of the Greek capital were closed and ferries were confined to the ports because of the strong winds.

Fresh snowfall saw the temperatures in Thessaloniki drop to -2ª Celsius (28ª Fahrenheit).
