Turmoil in the Ivory Coast: A Shell Mysteriously Appears in a District of Abidjan

Hot Topics Abidjan, Ivory Coast - 05 April 2011
A shell casing was found by the inhabitants of the Cocody-deux-plateaux district in Abidjan, Ivory Coast on the 5th of April, 2011.

Our contributor says:

"After the bombings yesterday [the 4th of April 2011] in Abidjan, a shell miraculously landed just by the entry of a private residence in Cocody-2-plateaux [a quite popular residential area] without harming anyone.

How was this shell able to land here, so far from the residence of Laurent Gbagbo and far from other sites targeted by french strikes?

We discovered this shell half-buried in the earth in the morning. No one knew how it had gotten there, but one could feel the walls trembling the day before, and some apartment windows were shattered.

I am, unfortunately, unable to tell you if this shell is from the French or United Nations helicopters... I can confirm, however, that it is not these two forces who have helicopters here. Also, according to the information, there was not a French bombing planned last night...

When that shell landed, the whole neighborhood knew (I live 300 meters away), and the noise was deafening. The walls of some houses were even shaking, and some windows broke.

This morning [April 5th], there was a crowd of people around this shell, and here the people saw a work of God, since this shell fell so close to a densely populated area, but didn't kill anyone.

I will confess that I, personally, do not want to approach it since I do not know if it is potentially explosive. It is therefore that I have not gone close enough to see if there is any sort of mark or inscription upon it.

Is this an accidental shooting or was there a tank in the area at the time this happened? It's difficult to say, since there has been constant fighting in this area at night since the beginning fo the crisis.

For my part, I am very distressed by the noise of combat becoming more and more frightening at night... and being of the French nationality, I asked on the phone for an evacuation by the French army; my request for evacuation has not been responded to at this time. So, as many of the other French, I will remain shut in my house."
