London bus workers strike, after dispute over Olympics bonus

Life London, United Kingdom - 22 June 2012

London bus workers strike at the Hounslow Bus Garage in London on June 22, 2012, after a dispute over a £500 Olympic bonus.

Unite, Britain's largest union, organized the strike, which is scheduled to last 24 hours. Thousands of workers, from 17 bus firms, are participating. According to a BBC article, over a third of the bus routes are running, in spite of the disruption.

Unite is demanding that every worker be granted an additional £500 for working during the Olympics.  In spite of the City's knowledge that the protests would take place, officials hoped the demonstrations would be canceled, after London Mayor Boris Johnson granted £8.3 million to transportation companies, to pay for bonuses.

Despite this concession, however, workers proceeded with the protests, stating that bus companies were not taking negotiations seriously. Unite recently announced that deals were made for workers at Heathrow Express, Network Rail, Docklands Light Railway, London Overground and London Underground.
