The United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development, also known as "Rio +20," will take place from June 20 to June 22, 2012. Leaders from around the world will gather in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to discuss strategies for poverty reduction, the advancement of social equity, and sustainable environmental protection.
The conference comes 20 years after the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development, which also took place in Rio de Janeiro. According to the official website, the conference will focus on developing a green economy that promotes sustainable poverty eradication and establishing an institutional framework for sustainable development.
In spite of the original objectives of the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development, challenges remain.
