World Environment Day results in public protests in Rio

Protesters gathered in Rio de Janeiro to protest against the commercialization of life and nature on World Environment Day, June 5, 2012.  The protests were organized by the People's Summit for Social and Environmental Justice.

"The manifestations started in front of INEA (Instituto Estadual do Ambiente  (State Environmental Institute)) located at Av. Venezuela 110 in the port region, then headed to Santos-Dumont Airport, where it ended with an anti-privatization campaign.

The People’s Summit  working group is formed by: Instituto Mais Democracia; Campanha contra os Agrotóxicos; Levante Popular da Juventude; Movimento dos Trabalhadores  Sem Terra -MST e MST-RJ; Comitê Popular da Copa e Olimpíadas; Grupo Ambientalista da Bahia; Sindicato Nacional dos Aeroviários; Rede Brasileira de Justiça Ambiental; PACS; Rede Jubileu Sul Brasil; Fórum da Saúde do Rio; Frente contra privatização da Saúde; Via Campesina; APEDEMA-Regional Baixada; Rio Menos 20; MNLM; AMP Vila Autódromo; Consulta Popular; ABEEF; DACM/Unirio; Rede de Grupos de Agroecologia do Brasil – REGA; and FAFERJ.

People’s Summit for Social and Environmental Justice in Rio +20 is organized by the civil society. The event will be held from June 15 to 23 in Aterro do Flamengo, as a parallel event to Rio+20 Conference."
