University of Minnesota holds justice for Trayvon Martin rally

Entertainment Minneapolis, United States - 30 March 2012

A "One Thousand Hoodie March" for Trayvon Martin was organized on the Northrop Plaza of the University of Minnesota campus on March 29, 2012.

The shooting of Trayvon Martin took place on February 26, 2012, in Sanford, Florida. Trayvon Martin was an unarmed 17-year-old African American boy who was shot and killed by 28-year-old George Zimmerman, a Hispanic American man.

Martin was walking from a convenience store to the home of his father's girlfriend when Zimmerman, a community watch coordinator, began following Martin and called the Sanford Police Department to say he witnessed suspicious behavior. Soon afterward, there was a confrontation that ended when Zimmerman fatally shot Martin. Martin was only carrying Skittles and an iced tea.

Zimmerman has confessed to shooting Martin but claims it was in self-defense. The Sanford police did not prosecute Zimmerman because of this claim and the fact that Florida's "Stand Your Ground" law seemed to apply to this case. However, in videos released to the press it was discovered that Zimmerman did not have all the injuries he had claimed to have sustained.

Eventually, the media's attention to the case led to Justice for Trayvon Martin protests from coast-to-coast in the USA, and even in some other countries. Since Martin was a black American and was wearing a hoodie at the time of his death, some media pundits said that this led to his suspicious look and death. This statement also led to outrage within the minority communities in the USA, so in protests many people have begun to wear hoodies and carry signs that say things like "Do I look suspicious?"
