Polahi tribes, Nomadic Life and Still Practicing IncestCulture Gorontalo, Indonesia - 13 May 2013
The word "Polahi" for some residents who live in Gorontalo is a story suffused with mystical. Although most of the people of Gorontalo to know the word, but only a fraction actually know the whereabouts Polahi.
Polahi is the name for a group of people who are still living in isolated rural mountain forest which covers an area Boliyohuto Paguyaman, Suwawa and Sumalata in Gorontalo province, Indonesia.
In contrast to other inland tribes in Indonesia, literature Polahi rate was minimal. This is because the closed attitude they have shown since the first. Polahi fear when meeting with other people, they usually run.
But in recent years there are some groups that have Polahi can live with other people, while still maintaining their old habits.
One of the groups that can be found is Polahi family who live in the inland forest life mountain Humohulo Boliyohuto, Paguyaman. Access to housing is not easy. It took walking for about 8 hours of Hamlet Pilomohuta, Bina Desa Jaya, District Paguyaman, the district was to achieve Polahi family home there.
"This is one of the easiest entrance if you want to visit them," said Chief Pilomohuta Hamlet, Udin Mole when accompanied me down the path and climb through seven of the river.
Bina Desa Jaya in itself actually there are 11 families were recorded Polahi. But since the death of their Chief, Baba Manio month ago, the family then scattered. Because the tribe Polahi, if there is one family member who died, then they all have to leave the house and settlement, then look for a new settlement.
Polahi once lived a very nomadic. Looking for land for planting, and after that migrate to a new land. Later after harvest time, they will be back again. They almost have no fixed abode.
However Polahi encountered in the interior forests remain Humoholo already have a house, even though it still looks very simple. Only the results of the rest of the board is made from the forest encroachers with a roof of palm leaves and leaf thatch.
Now there is a family in the woods Humohulo Polahi Manio Baba who is a descendant who marries his wife Mama Tanio, who is none other than his own brother. They live in two different houses location with a decent distance away.
The first house livable Mama Babuta Tanio with their children who automatically become a leader now. Babuta Lanio not marry another child of a father with a wife named Hasimah. Hasimah with other families living in separate locations in the forest Tumba.
In the main house, living Mama Tanio children as well as children from Babuta. While second homes livable Mama Tanio sister who lived with other children of Baba Manio named Laiya wife who had two brothers.
Fellow sibling mating for Polahi is normal. Father to marry his daughter, the mother married to his son, and brother to marry his sister. "If a lot of people in the village, but there were only us, so mating," says Mama Tanio in Gorontalo language typical accent innocently.
Isolation they make a practice of incest is considered normal. Polahi knows no religion. They simply adopts the traditional religions, who believe in nature. Polahi are marginalized citizens with their stupidity. Though now they are used to wearing clothes, but hardly ever education they feel.
"Back then they did not recognize the number at all. But now because it often interacts with other people, they have known the money," said Udin.
Instead Gorontalo government has never tried to bring them to live with other people. A location close to the residential area in the hamlet Pilomohuta ever built. "There are nine Livable Home (Mahayani) which was built by the government. But they leave and enter the forest again," said Udin.
Tanio Mama says they can not live in a hot area. Their place is a jungle. Alamlah that feed them. "If you want to give us a home, get up in the woods here, we can not sleep in the village," Mama Tanio giving reasons.
"Our ancestors warned to never leave the forest," added Babuta.
