World’s Longest Sirtaki Dance underway in Greece

Culture Volos, Greece - 13 August 2012

Two thousand twelve people will participate, the famous Zorba music will be heard in Volos and the World Guinness record officials will attend the event to make sure that these Greeks will break the sirtaki record this time.

On August 31, 2012, the people of Thessalia will dance sirtaki for five minutes in front of several other visitors in a bid to be included in the new Guinness record book.

The sirtaki - or syrtaki - is a dance inspired by the Greek tradition, choreographed by Giorgios Provas for the 1964 movie "Zorba the Greek", starring Anthony Quinn.

People hold their hands on their neighbour's shoulders and dance in line or in circle.

Photos taken on August 13, 2012 during the rehearsal in Panthessalian Stadium of Volos. Volos is an important port of central Greece, 320 km from Athens.
